Trust – Wireless Laser Deskset DS-4500X

On one hand we warm to Trust because the company spells ‘laser’ the way we prefer. But sadly, the quality of its Wireless Laser Deskset pack left a little to be desired.

We should be straight and point out from the off that this is the cheapest of the three products we’re comparing. We found it on sale for under ??30, and that’s a useful price tag if you’re looking to get hold of an able, modern keyboard and mouse set.

Yet we have to pull in the false economy argument here. Our main beef is with the keyboard, which is simply not very comfortable to use. Whilst the supplied wrist rest is helpful, it’s far behind the standard and sturdiness of the Logitech and Microsoft equivalents, and the travel on the keys themselves just doesn’t feel right(sigma).

It’s a comparably compact keyboard, which is going to appeal to some, and it doesn’t skimp when it comes to those extra buttons either. Here the media control buttons, complete with a circular pair of volume controls, are located in the top right, while the left of the keyboard is where you’ll find a scroll wheel, buttons relating to online functionality and a couple for security and power-related features. Enough of an arsenal to satiate most.

he laser mouse thoughtfully comes with a cradle for keeping it charged, and we warmed to it more than we did the keyboard. In a straight face-off with either the Logitech or Microsoft rodent we’ve looked at in this round-up, it’s in third place when it comes to comfort, but it’s not too far behind. It’s an adept squeaker too, having the increasingly-traditional side button along with its scroll wheel (for vertical scrolling only) and traditional left and right buttons too.

Once again, we found the package pleasantly simple to get up and running, with trust wirel providing a CD with the necessary software to get the most out of your new set. But the truth is that if you bought the mouse on its own, chances are you’d be quite content. Yet if you try to spend any great amount of time with the keyboard, the compromises required by the price tag start to show through.

The computer industry has, many times over the years, disproved the notion that sometimes you get what you pay for. In the case of Trust’s mixed Wireless Laser Deskset, it’s partially true, unfortunately. Especially when, for not too much more, you could upgrade to the Microsoft kit which you’re likely to be far happier with.

Ultimately, the low price tag doesn’t make up for the disappointing quality of the Wireless Laser Deskset’s keyboard. Decent mouse, though.
